The Arts
All students participate in the creative arts. Teaching of the arts is very much part of the school’s culture and students, especially year 5 and 6 children, are strongly encouraged to take part in extra-curricular opportunities on offer.
Music is high profile in the school and is often integrated with other curriculum areas. We are fortunate to have a specialist music teacher who teaches all classes each week. Children are taught to play the recorder as part of their class music programme.
There are Middle and Senior choirs that have regular opportunities to perform. In addition, there are two orchestras, a marimba group and a rock band. Individual tuition for a variety of instruments is available on a user-pay basis outside school hours.
We are also privileged to have an art specialist who provides a rich art programme that covers all aspects of the NZ Curriculum. All students visit our art atelier on a regular basis.
Drama and Dance are valued parts of the curriculum and are normally taught by specialist teachers.
Kapa Haka for juniors and seniors, Jump Jam and gymnastics are also offered on a regular basis.
A highlight is a school musical production which is performed biennially and in between, other performances feature. As well, arts festivals and Junior Christmas concerts are performed regularly.
An annual speech competition involves all Middle and Senior students and each year successful Senior students enter the Devonport inter-school competition.
We strongly encourage all year 5 and 6 students especially, to take part in at least one of the extra-curricular creative arts.
