Sports
Opportunities are available for students of all abilities to pursue individual interests in sport. At Hauraki School tamariki enjoy such challenges and they encourage each other to do their best. They thrive on team spirit, and gain a sense of responsibility and self-esteem, as well as having fun. Achievements are recognised and celebrated.
Representative sports teams for Middle and Senior tamariki that feature include cricket, hockey, basketball, netball, soccer, rugby and water polo. All children in years 5 and 6 are strongly encouraged to play at least one representative sport.
Swimming normally takes place during terms 1 and 4 depending on the weather. Children are timetabled for instructional lessons and all are expected to participate unless a very good reason for exemption is provided by parents.
Swim School
The swimIQ swim school operates out of school hours in terms 1 and 4 in our school pool on a user-pay basis for students learning to swim. Enrolments are via the swimIQ website swimiq.co.nz
Participants are accepted on a first-come-first-served basis. See Programme Overview for the levels of their lessons.
Enquiries from interested parents/families may be sent to Lauren Boyle at swimiq.contact@gmail.com
A Waterwise programme takes place during the summer at Narrow Neck beach and helps all year 6 students gain confidence on the water. It teaches them to sail Optimist yachts, and paddle kayaks, as well as covering many aspects of water safety. This is carried out by trained instructors and teachers, but is dependent on parent support.
In addition, swimming, cross country, and athletic sports days are held annually for all children with the opportunity to compete in inter-school competitions as well.
A school camp is held at the beginning of each year for year 6 students, which also provides opportunities for challenge outside the classroom and helps to develop healthy, wholesome individuals.
