A-Z Information
Attendance
It is a legal requirement that all students attend school every day unless unwell. This is reported on as part of mid-year and end-of-year student reports to parents. We ask that holidays be confined to school holidays only. In exceptional circumstances students may be granted approved absence, but this must be communicated to and approved by the Principal.
If your child is absent because of illness, please email/phone the teacher and school office on the day. For safety reasons it is important that we can account for all students who are absent from their classrooms when the register is called at the beginning of the day and after lunch.
It is also necessary to notify the school:
- If your child has a notifiable or infectious disease
- If you change your address or telephone number
Before and After-School Care
This high-quality service is provided on a daily basis by Hauraki staff member, Mrs Tracey Vail. Hours are from 7.30-8.30 am and 3-5.30pm based in the school hall. Children may attend on a regular or casual basis. Phone Tracey on 021 1833 595 for details..
Bicycles and Scooters
Children 9 years of age are able to ride bikes or scooters to school independently once they have passed a test at school and been issued with a licence. All students under 9 years of age may ride to school, but must be accompanied by a parent/caregiver.
Dental Services
A Dental Therapist in a mobile van visits twice a year normally. All children are checked during these visits. Dates will be advised in the newsletter. If your child requires additional treatment, you will be advised to take him/her to the dental clinic at Belmont Intermediate School.
Homework
This is set on a regular basis to complement class programmes and reinforce what children have been taught. Every student is expected to complete it. A guide for the amount of time involved is as follows: Juniors (Years 1 and 2) up to 20 minutes per night, Middle School (Years 3 and 4) 30 minutes Monday to Thursday, and Seniors (Years 5 and 6) 40 minutes Monday to Thursday.
House Competitions
House competitions both inside and outside are ongoing, points are earned, and the totals are announced at fortnightly whole-school assemblies. The winning House flies their flag on the pole outside the school office. At the end of the year, the overall winning House is announced and presented with the shield that is kept in the glass cabinet in the school foyer.
Lost Property
This is placed in a box in the vicinity of the hall and at the end of each term what is left unclaimed is sent to a charitable organisation.
Lunches
Healthy eating is promoted at Hauraki School. Children should bring their lunch to school each day and something for morning tea as well, unless they are ordering lunch as outlined below.
We encourage healthy morning teas and lunches that include fresh and/or dried fruit. Please bear in mind that we strongly discourage sweet treats and predominantly packaged food. Takeaways are not allowed to be brought into the school at lunch times for students. Also sweet drinks are not permitted, as we are a water-only school.
Please talk to your children about their lunches so that they are happy to eat the food provided. Check that the amount that your child has is appropriate. Sometimes children have too much and others occasionally do not have enough!
The school is contracted to local outside agencies to provide healthy lunches two days a week. We offer pita bread Mondays, Five Loaves Lunches on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and sushi Fridays. This can be purchased through the myKindo account.

Parent Contributions
The School receives an operational grant from the Ministry of Education for day-to-day running costs. Because there is always a shortfall, it is made up by parent donations and fundraising, which are necessary if we are to continue to provide a standard of education which extends beyond that provided by the state system. These donations are mainly put towards providing additional staff, but also to purchase additional resources that support curriculum delivery.
The parent contribution is set as follows:
- One child at the school $390 per annum
- Two or more children $370 each child
Payments
We offer payment for school expenses including uniform, activities, sports registration and parent contributions via Kindo.

Road Safety
All children and parents are expected to use the crossing when wanting to get to the other side of the road. This is patrolled by selected year 6 wardens at the beginning and end of the school day. We are grateful to the parents who supervise this on a daily basis.
Parents dropping off and picking up children must observe basic road rules and parking restrictions near the school entrance. No parent cars can enter the school grounds between 8.30–9am and 2.45– 3.20pm. This is monitored by the school in conjunction with the police. Please read Auckland Transport's message for parents on car restraints for children.
Children nine years of age and over are able to ride their bikes or scooters to school independently once they have passed a test. Younger children can ride to school but must be accompanied by a parent or adult.

Please note that we purchase as economically as possible and the school does not make any money from stationery.Sun Protection
In Terms 1 and 4 all children are required to wear a sunhat during morning interval and lunch time. Children without them play under the shade sails only.
Parents are encouraged to ensure children wear sunblock to school during summer time.
Travelwise
Hauraki School is an official Travelwise school that aims to improve road safety and reduce the number of vehicles driving to and from school at peak times.
Walking school bus routes are encouraged as they are an effective way of reducing traffic congestion at the school gate. These are led by parents who volunteer.
Selected year 6 students are trained each year to be road patrol wardens and ensure that students cross the road safely at the pedestrian crossing in front of the school gate. We are grateful to the parents who supervise this on a daily basis.
Children are taught the Safe Walking Programme at school with the help of police to develop an increased awareness of road safety.
Children nine years of age and over are able to ride their bikes to school once they have passed their licence that is administered by the school and police.

Walking School Bus
Hauraki School currently offers four walking school bus routes, starting from Hart Rd, Jutland Rd, Eversleigh Rd and Walter St. We strongly encourage children to walk to school as it promotes healthy living, provides opportunity to make new friends, and helps reduce chaos at the school gate.
What is a Walking School Bus?
- A walking school bus is just like a school bus except children walk to school under the supervision of adult volunteers, creating a safe and social journey to school.
- Children are collected from stops along a planned route and dropped off at the school gate. Along the way they learn how to safely negotiate the road and have an opportunity to socialise and share stories with friends and neighbours. What a great way to travel to school!
- Walking school buses also make a contribution to reducing the amount of traffic around schools – in Auckland there are more than 200 active walking school buses, with over 4,000 children regularly walking to school. That’s a lot of active feet on the street.
How do I join?

Benefits
- Health and fitness – for children and parent walkers alike
- A big time saver as you don't have to negotiate the slog to school, traffic at gate, etc – the bus does it for you
- Great socialisation – lasting friendships for the kids, and parents get to meet fellow members of the community
- Promoting independence in our little ones
- Kids get great rewards, including: fun bag tags, certificates, and choices of goodies when they finish 'bus tickets'. Exclusive special events at school, like free sausage sizzle, milo and muffin mornings, summer lunchtime swimming in the pool
- Safety. As it's a supervised group, you know your children will benefit from the presence of adults.
Parental Commitment
- The WSB works thanks to parents like you. One morning a week you 'drive' the bus, the other four mornings you're freed from the school run. Of course, you can 'drive' more often if you'd like.
- What happens if you can't make it one morning? We all have times when sickness, work or other commitments mean we need help, and WSB parents support each other through them. Just shout out to fellow bus drivers on your route, and arrange for a swap or if someone can help out.
