Our School
A Word from the Principal
Mā mua ka kite a muri, mā muri ka ora a mua.
Those who lead give sight to those who follow, those who follow give life to those who lead.
A holistic education is provided at Hauraki School so that students leave with knowledge, skills, positive attitudes and a joy for learning which will enable them to be smart and worthy future citizens.
For me, the formula is simple – it is about parents who expect high standards, teachers who set these, and students who aspire to achieve them in day-to-day school life.
We are academically orientated and provide a comprehensive coverage of the national curriculum at all levels, ensuring that each unique individual is catered for. Children’s enthusiasm and talent is also fostered and encouraged through a generous range of sporting and cultural activities. Students’ wellbeing is nurtured in a variety of ways and children are encouraged to apply our school motto Endeavour on a daily basis and be the best they can be.
Staff at Hauraki School are committed to providing an orderly, safe, caring and stimulating environment, and a place where tamariki want to be so that they are most likely to be happy and successful learners appropriate for today’s world.
A challenging curriculum, high standards of discipline, dedicated teachers, and a supportive environment culminate in a culture that aspires to excellence making Hauraki School a very special place.

About the School
Hauraki School is a multi-cultural state primary school located in Takapuna on Auckland’s North Shore and was founded in May 1954. It is considered to be a school of high socio-economic status and has grown steadily to reach a current roll of approximately 500+ students and a total staff of 50.
Ethnic composition is approximately New Zealand European / Pākehā 43%, Asian 35%, Māori 6% and other ethnic groups 16%.
Children begin at five years of age in Year 1 and finish at the end of Year 6 when they move on to Intermediate, normally Belmont Intermediate, Takapuna Normal Intermediate or a private institution.
Our caring and capable staff work together to provide high-quality educational programmes that are aligned to the National Curriculum. The Junior School consists of years 1 and 2 is led by the Associate Principal; the Middle School, years 3 and 4 is led by a senior teacher; and years 5 and 6, the Senior School, is led by the Deputy Principal. There are normally three to four classes at each year level.
The School is administered by a Board of Trustees which is elected every three years and comprises five parents, a staff member, and Principal. It has overall responsibility and accountability for strategic planning, financial management, and student progress, and ensures the school operates ethically and legally through the Principal and staff. Meetings are held twice a term and any member of the public is welcome to attend.
In addition, a Parent-Teacher Association is elected annually and all parents and interested parties are warmly invited to twice termly meetings and/or assist in a variety of ways. The PTA is an excellent medium for parents to meet others and to provide much-needed and greatly appreciated assistance with school activities.
Hauraki enjoys an excellent community reputation. Staff and students are continually aspiring towards excellence and our results show consistent achievement well above national norms. The latest Education Review Office Report verifies this and is also available for perusal at the school office if preferred.

Hauraki School’s site of just over two hectares incorporates 23 stimulating and attractively presented single-celled classrooms, which are neatly divided into three blocks, Junior, Middle, and Senior. An attractive and well-resourced library, music room and art atelier also feature, as well as small specialist teaching spaces. Our many resources are stored in three specific areas. About half the school is of an older style but classrooms are well maintained, have the advantage of size, and are well heated during winter. The junior block is relatively new and provides a very attractive learning environment. There is a two-storeyed administration block and an impressive large multi-purpose hall. In the foyer of this is a pōhutukawa tree sculpture and families are able to leave their legacy by donating a bird or flower which will remain for generations to come and enjoy.
In addition, a 25-metre outdoor swimming pool, rugby field, cricket pitch, soccer field, netball and basketball courts, and a Junior, Middle and Senior playground feature.
We are proud of our park-like school grounds and welcome the use of these outside school hours by children and adults but everyone is expected to respect them. A ‘No Dog’ and ‘No Golf’ policy must be adhered to at all times.
The School’s setting in a quiet, spacious location close to the sea and surrounded by residential housing gives Hauraki special aesthetic appeal appreciated by so many.
